THE HAPPY BIRTHDAY SONG 

 

La tradicional canción de "Feliz Cumpleaños" es considerada la canción más popular del mundo según el libro Guinness de los Récords de 1998. Sin embargo, se trata de una canción con origen curioso, con un dueño y con copyright.

En 1893, las hermanas norteamericanas Mildred y Patty Smith Hill, que eran maestras jardineras en Louisville, Kentucky, escribieron un libro con canciones para niños de jardín de infantes. La primera canción era "Buenos Días a Todos", una sencilla canción para saludar a los niños:

   Good morning to you,
   Good morning to you,
   Good morning, dear children,
   Good morning to all.

Como cierto día era el cumpleaños de una niña, Patty decidió conservar la melodía y cambiar la letra de la canción por "Happy Birthday to You", dando así origen a la famosa canción.

En 1924, se publicó esta canción en un libro de canciones de Robert Coleman, y luego se hizo popular gracias a la radio y al cine. Fue entonces que la tercera de las hermanas Hill, Jessica Hill, demostró que la canción original era autoría de sus hermanas y en 1934 obtuvo los derechos de autor.

En 1935 la compañía Summy, trabajando junto a Jessica Hill, obtuvo un nuevo copyright. En 1990 la compañía Warner adquirió esa empresa por 15 millones de dólares y pasó a obtener el copyright, de un valor estimado de 5 millones.

Según la ley, este copyright caduca recién en 2030 en Estados Unidos (2016 en Europa), por lo que cualquier uso comercial de la canción debe ser autorizado mediante el pago de los derechos correspondientes. Pero no te preocupes,¡ puedes seguir cantándola en las fiestas familiares gratis!

The traditional "Happy Birthday" song is considered the most popular song in the world according to the 1998 Guinness Book of World Records. However, it is a song with curious origins, with an owner and with copyright.

 In 1893, American sisters Mildred and Patty Smith Hill, who were kindergarten school teachers in Louisville, Kentucky, wrote a book with songs for kindergarten children. The first song was called "Good Morning to All", a simple song to greet the children:

   Good morning to you,
   Good morning to you,
   Good morning, dear children,
   Good morning to all.

As a certain day it was one of the girls' birthday, Patty decided to keep the melody and change the lyrics of the song for "Happy Birthday to You", giving origin to the famous song.

In 1924, the song was published on a songbook by Robert Coleman, and then it became popular thanks to the radio and the cinema. It was then that the third of the Hill sisters, Jessica Hill, proved that the original song had been written by her sisters and in 1934 she obtained the copyright.

In 1935 the Summy Company, working with Jessica Hill, obtained a new copyright. In 1990 the Warner Corporation purchased that company for US$ 15 million and obtained the copyright, with an estimated value of US$ 5 million.

According to the laws, this copyright won't expire until 2030 in the United States (2016 in Europe), so any commercial use of the song should be authorized by paying the corresponding royalties.  But don't worry, you can still sing it at family parties for free!
