Suspect opens fire on Salem police during attempted arrest
SALEM, Mass. —Two Salem police officers came under fire Thursday evening while trying to arrest a suspect, police said.
The police officers were trying to arrest the man on Fairfield Street around 6:15 p.m. when the he pulled out a gun and opened fire, police said.
The suspect then fled the area on foot, and neither of the officers was injured.
With guns drawn, police set up a perimeter and told people to stay away from the area for several hours. Neighbors said they saw police bring in K-9 units to help search.
“The woman, an older woman, she was told to get back in the house,” neighbor Erin Heenan said. “Police found the gun in her backyard.”
Police suspended their search for the suspect around 8 p.m., and said they believe he is no longer in the area.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police.
